When our oldest child was three (about eight years ago), we received a box full of old Disney VHS tapes from my in-laws.  Thus launched our weekly movie night. The VHS tapes are now long gone, but in their stead is seven years of a weekly family tradition:  movie night.

Necessary Caveats:

  • You know as well as I do that finding movies worthy of viewing is nearly impossible.  We have to sift through 99 percent of all movies ever produced to find the handful of good ones.  We often ask other Christian families for movie recommendations, and we keep our eyes out for any movies recommended highly by PluggedIn or World Magazine.  If there is anything sexual in the movie, it is removed from consideration, period.  We can tolerate movies with some twaddly scenes, but never scenes with sexual immorality, because that is not honoring to our Lord.  Because of the young age of our kids, we also never allow a movie with any profanity.  We have stopped movies before when we get a distinct sense it will be riddled with potty-humor or especially if the Lord's name is taken in vain.
  • Many movies (not listed below) Chris and I watched and enjoyed as children, but when we rewatched with them our kids, we were horrified at how horrible they were, and promptly stopped them.
  • We haven't loved every single one of these movies, but many of them are really good, some of them we have watched multiple times, and some didn't do a whole lot more than fill the bill of achieving another family move night.  I double-starred every movie that our family absolutely loved and therefore either owns or would like to own.
  • Note:  every single family is different and has a different family culture!  Just like our family library will never be identical to any other family's, our movie list will not match anyone else's.
